The Lucina Birth Centre (LBC) is a non-profit organization offering a supportive, inclusive, and comfortable choice of  birth location to people under the care of a Registered Midwife (we do not provide midwives). We are a small, private medical facility with two birthing suites, welcoming all cultural practices and ceremony in our space. Register here.

The birth centre is intended for people with low-risk pregnancies under midwifery care in Alberta. Midwives help minimize the level of obstetrical intervention and offer unmedicated pain-coping tools. Our outdoor grounds and common areas are absolutely stunning and can be enjoyed during labour in warmer weather.

Important to Note: Lucina Birth Centre DOES NOT provide you with a midwife. The Lucina Midwives are a separate primary-care clinic for normal, healthy pregnancies and are covered through AHS health care. It is your responsibility to acquire midwifery care prior to registering for the birth centre as your chosen birth location.

Our mission as a non-profit is to be accessible to everyone. Through donations from people like you and fundraising efforts, we strive to offer fee subsidy to families facing systematic and financial barriers through our Lucina Family Support Fund (people of colour, Indigenous birthers, 2SLGBTQIA+). Private birthing suites are equipped with:

• Birth tub & large shower
• Birthstools, exercise balls, peanut ball, donut balls
• Birth sling/swing (long piece of fabric anchored to the ceiling)
• Dimmable lighting
• Climate control (fans & air conditioning)
• Laughing gas (nitrous oxide/gas & air/entonox gas)
• TENS machine
• Portable bluetooth speaker
• Homeopathic remedies (to be used administered by your midwife)

Peace of mind & Safety:

• Emergency medical supplies in each room.
• 5 minutes from Misericordia Hospital in case of an emergency transfer (Please note that hospital transfer location may be determined by your midwife’s hospital privilege status and/or EMS dispatch.)

Leave the set up and clean up to the Lucina Birth Centre:

We provide all linens and supplies necessary and will send you home with essential hygienic supplies for postpartum recovery.

Rooms are fully stocked for each birth with all the medical supplies, equipment, and medications your midwife requires for a safe birth.

Delicious postpartum meal:

We provide you with a nourishing meal after baby has arrived. The meal includes: pumpkin-spiced waffles, fruit and yogurt parfait with granola, juice/coffee/tea. We can accommodate most dietary restrictions within this menu.

Flexible payment plans:

We offer a 3 installment payment plan, which can be modified to suit your needs. For details click here. For many people, fees may be covered by extended health care benefit plans as a “private hospital room” and through wellness/health spending accounts. Your room fee is also considered a medical expense on your annual income tax return. Lucina Birth Centre in a non-profit organization with dividends being given back to our birthing community through our Lucina Family Support Fund.
