Carly Beaulieu – Midwife (she/her)

Carly’s passion for midwifery began after her son was born at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital in 2003. She subsequently had a homebirth with her daughter and loved it so much she felt the need to help others do the same.

Carly began serving women in childbirth as a doula in Calgary. She then graduated with a Master of Science in Midwifery from the Midwives College of Utah.

In 2010, Carly moved to Edmonton to begin her clinical practice and she started out working at the Westview Hospital in Stony Plain. When the maternity unit was closed at Westview in 2011, Carly was fortunate enough to be a part of the opening of Lucina Centre!

She is now the Practice Lead for Lucina Midwives. Carly is very honoured to serve the women of Edmonton and area.

Laura Gibb – Midwife (she/her)

Laura has been a Registered Nurse since 2009 and a Registered Midwife since 2015. She has both a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and a Master’s degree as a Certified Nurse-Midwife. After completing her midwifery degree, she started her own home birth practice in Indianapolis, Indiana and ran it for 3 years.  However, she always wanted to live and work in Canada where her father had grown up.  She joined Lucina Midwives in 2019.

Laura brings to her practice extensive medical experience as well as a functional medicine philosophy. She uses diet, herbs, supplements, homeopathics, and medications to achieve optimal maternal/fetal outcomes. She believes informed decision making is an important component of care so that families can make the best decisions for themselves. She is passionate about prenatal care and how it positively affects pregnancy/birth outcomes and prevents complications.

Laura is fluent in French and Spanish.  She is married to a Frenchman and has two school-aged children.  Her youngest child was born at home. Laura enjoys spending time with her family, camping, hiking, and travelling. In the summer of 2023, she did her first (but not her last) triathlon!

Laura Mackin – Midwife (she/her)

Laura first became interested in midwifery when she was pregnant with her first child in 2001. Everything about pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding fascinated her. Working as a midwife over the years has deepened her love and commitment for providing evidenced-based, family centered care. Laura ensures that birthing families feel supported and understand their options, including out-of-hospital birth for low-risk patients. When not baby catching, she is usually hanging out with her kids, doing yoga or knitting.

Laura became a certified doula (DONA) in 2002. Over the next 8 years she attended many births as a doula, became a certified childbirth educator (CBE) and became a doula trainer for a volunteer organization in Winnipeg, MB. In that time, she also went on to have two more children of her own (with midwives of course!) prior to undertaking a bachelor’s degree in midwifery. In 2014, she moved from Winnipeg to Vernon, B.C. where she practiced for 9 more years. Laura is excited to have joined the midwife team at Lucina Midwives!

Stefanie McKinnon – Midwife (she/her)

My passion for midwifery was ignited by a deep-seated conviction to support families throughout the entirety of their pregnancy. My journey began in Edmonton, where I served as a doula for 15 years, accompanying families through the intimate moments of childbirth, both at home and in hospital settings. As a doula, I witnessed the spectrum of human resilience and vulnerability, which fueled my advocacy for informed choice and evidence-based care. In addition to my doula work, I received certifications as a lactation counselor and childbirth educator, equipping myself with knowledge and skills to comprehensively support families in their prenatal, birth, and postpartum journeys.

Now, as a member of the Lucina Midwives team, I am privileged to continue my work in nurturing families through the transformative experience of childbirth. Grounded in the principles of midwifery, I strive to provide care that is both compassionate and supportive. I am proud to advocate for the specific needs of diverse family structures, while also honouring the autonomy and choices of each individual I serve. Every decision and every moment carries weight and meaning, and my mission is to ensure that families feel supported, empowered, and informed every step of the way.

Outside of the birthing room, you’ll often find me immersed in the rhythm of nature, whether it’s pounding the pavement on a morning run, cycling, or hiking through the mountains with my family. When I seek solace in quieter moments, you’ll find me in the garden or knitting, discovering beauty in the simplicity of creation.

Kayla Woodman – Manager (she/her)

As the Lucina Birth Centre and Lucina Midwives office manager, Kayla handles everything required to keep things running smoothly. You’ll find her running around town between the two midwifery clinics and the Lucina Birth Centre, cooking the famous pumpkin spice waffles and making sure everything is perfect for your big day!

When not working at the birth centre, she spends her time with her nose in a textbook as a nursing student, with the dream of being a Second Attendant for the midwives at out-of-hospital births. Kayla also passionately supports and guides expecting families as a Certified DONA Birth Doula & Birthing From Within Childbirth Educator. She teaches monthly prenatal Birth Prep Workshops in the Lucina Birth Centre basement (independent from her role as Manager).

If she wasn’t busy enough, she is also family-focused, with two children and an incredible husband who support her through all of her big dreams and endeavors.
